Уильям Уорд был крупным и весьма знатным человеком, хорошо известным в графстве Шампейн на рубеже XIX века. Один из современников описал его следующим образом: он был «высоким и широкоплечим, с высокими скулами, проницательными глазами и темно-каштановыми волосами, перевязанными черной лентой в длинную очередь, прямо стоячим и очень опрятным в одежде. но один стиль шляпы — черный фетр, с высокой тульей и широкими полями, которые не были подняты. На нем был черный сюртук, или сюрту , а верхом на лошади он носил зеленые фланелевые халаты или леггинсы, перевязанные хорьком ниже колена ».
